Cities kill religion, or at
least spirituality. I think it’s
the dirty waste smoke—not
the clean smoke of burning maple.

It gathers on the life of the
air,
turns it brownish gray and
makes it heavy enough to sink
and accumulate like a glaze
on the street.

Even one so atheistic as
I can have a hard time
in the morning, walking
outside in the early light
and seeing an apple
fall
from the tree, thinking
about how it grew,
what it took and why
just before ducking
in the wood shed for
kindling.
